I was asked to create a visual identity for the Peter app, which was developed for all employees of the Clemenger Group. It helps you find colleagues, book meeting rooms, order meals, and read news.
I tried to create an art direction that was unexpected for a digital platform, giving it texture in the mark-making. I painted the strokes with watercolour and scanned them in - then added thinner lines connecting a narrative with coloured pencil, overlaying them in Photoshop.
We also made a promotional animation for the app (also voiced by me), bringing movement and personality to these organic shapes.
This project was part of the Google Skippy’s, a YouTube Competition where creative agencies were given the same client brief (this year it was the Museum of Old and New Art in Tasmania), and asked to create a TrueView ad up to 2 minutes long. The winner is crowned based on view-through rate, average watch time and organic view count.
I was lucky enough to work as the Art Director on this pre-roll. Enthralled by Wim Delvoye's Cloaca Professional (also known as the "shit machine"), we question the role of art, consumption of culture & the way shit equalises us.
Beryl the Third is a contemporary redesign of the Beano character Beryl the Peril. The following animation won a Yellow Pencil at the D&AD New Blood Awards.
I have an ongoing creative collaboration with custom LED neon business Glowjob NZ, in which my designs are hand crafted into beautiful “glowies”.
These are some character designs I drew inspired by 90s fashion, (after watching a lot of Darya and Clueless).
A small selection of digital work I’ve done as visual development or background art for animation.
A couple of my most recent digital portraits painted in Photoshop.
A small selection of my painting work, in acrylic and gouache.
These are some fun mountain goat characters I developed.
Flesh (2017) is a work that speaks a conflict of violence and calm, ecstasy and despair, beauty and pain. It plays with notions of flow, transition, introspection, vulnerability and limbo.
Combining painting and 2D digital animation with a figurative style, the complex composition of bodies is a large mural of life-sized nudes acting as a contemporary otherworldly tableau, over which the animated bodies are projected in floating gestures. It is a confrontation of darker tones, while simultaneously being a dance of sorts.
This is a music video that I created for the Dunedin band, the Rothmans. I overlayed sweeping footage of a drawing several meters long with footage of the band through projection & post-production techniques.
These are some cute robot character designs I did with copic markers & coloured pencils.
Battery boy is a little sparky character I created in my spare time. I wanted to create a run cycle for him that was full of energy.
This is a music video I created for Kane Strang's "My Smile Is Extinct". I combined swirling, surreal footage of paint in my sink with traditional animation techniques (stop motion & frame-by-frame ink on paper).
These animated illustrations are inspired by the splendiferous work of Roald Dahl.
